Responsibilities of the Allen County Engineer's Office

The Allen County Engineer's Office is responsible for the maintenance of Allen County's local highway system, which includes 342 miles of county roads and 530 miles of township roads. Also maintained are 420 bridges and 686 culverts of various sizes. About 350 miles of roads are centerline striped annually. The 12 townships and the county engineer cooperate in a working relationship that is unique in northwest Ohio. Roadside mowing, snow plowing, drainage improvements and road maintenance work is shared by the townships and the county engineer to give residents of Allen County the best use of their tax money.

Allen County Engineer's Garage and Office

The Allen County Engineer's main office is at the Allen County Garage, which was erected in 1947 at the corner of Robb Avenue and Sugar Street. The office was remodeled and enlarged in 1984. The Tax Map Office is located on the second floor of the Allen County Courthouse at 301 N. Main Street in Lima. The garage sits on 9 acres on the East Side of Lima and is located about 1 mile west of Interstate 75. The garage has 24,000 square feet of floor space for housing 18 snow plows, 2 mechanics bays, superintendents offices, an employee break room, a men's locker room, a traffic sign room and a bridge materials area. The office covers 10,000 square feet and houses the design engineering staff in the main drafting room, the Allen County Engineer's office, Chief Deputy Engineer's Office, the inspectors', chief surveyor's, and drainage maintenance crew's offices, restrooms, employee conference room, records vault, blueprint room, small conference room, resource room and an office for the accounting clerk. The foyer area houses the receptionist and visitor's waiting area. The Allen County Engineer's Office maintains approximately 60 vehicles varying from staff vehicles to heavy construction equipment.
