A wind farm has been proposed for southeastern Allen County and northeastern Auglaize County. So what is a “wind farm”? A wind farm is made up of up to 300 windmills, now called wind turbines, that catch the wind and generate electricity by using a generator. This electricity is then sold to local electric companies. Wind farms usually are scattered over several square miles and usually have at least 70 wind turbines, which are located ½ to 1 mile apart. The wind turbines usually are from 300 to 400 feet tall from ground level to the tip of the blades. Landowners where the turbines are located are paid a yearly fee by the wind company to locate the wind turbines, power lines and access roads on their properties. Wind farms have to be approved by the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) and usually take 2 years from conception to operation. The OPSB holds a hearing to hear testimony from citizens, before certifying the wind farm for operations.
