Six Additional Bridge Load Limits, 5-30-13

As part of a growing trend across Ohio, the Allen County Engineer today asked the Allen County Commissioners to post six (6) more bridges with weight limits.  With the addition of these six (6) new load limits, Allen County will have twenty-two (22) bridges with load limit restrictions and two (2) CLOSED bridges.  The estimated cost to replace all twenty-four of these restricted-use bridges is $ 14.5 million.  Allen County has been spending close to $1 million dollars annually to replace or repair bridges and culverts.  At current funding levels, just to replace these 24 bridges that are posted or closed, it will take over 15 years to replace these bridges.  By that time, Allen County will have posted another 10-20 bridges due to deterioration. At the current rate of funding for bridges, the County Engineer’s department will never get caught up.

Tim Piper, Allen County Engineer and President of the County Engineers Association of Ohio stated today, “These posted county bridges are not dangerous but they are deteriorating and we have no funding to get them replaced. This is becoming a real problem across the state, and if county engineers do not get additional funding from the Ohio Legislature to replace bridges in the next 4 years, we will reach a bridge crisis and a lot of bridges will have to be closed in the next 10 years.”  Full story...

The 2013 Road Progam, 4-22-13

In 2013, over $1.7 million dollars will be spent for county, township & village road work.  Our county road crews and our paving contractor will be very busy paving 14.2 miles of county, township and village roads and sealing 56 miles of roads; sealing is another name for tar & chip application to the surface of the roadway.  Seal acts as a water sealant to keep pavement from absorbing water.
